What is Computer Vision Syndrome?
With the continued adoption of technology around the world, more and more users are experiencing related strain and vision-related problems – so much so that the American Optometric Association has classified a new syndrome: Computer Vision Syndrome. Computer Vision Syndrome (aka digital eye strain) is exactly as it sounds – a group of eye-related issues that stem from prolonged usage of computers, tablets, and other handheld devices.
The symptoms of digital eye strain can vary, often depending on how much you use related technologies and the conditions surrounding that use. Long hours in front of the computer at work, followed by extensive usage at home, will likely result in more issues than those who don’t use computers or devices during the day.
Ambient lighting can also play a pivotal role in Computer Vision Syndrome. Using screens in dark ambient lighting can cause more fatigue and issues like dry eyes. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms regularly, odds are you’re suffering from some form of digital eye strain and would benefit from a visit to our Nashville eye doctor.
- Eyestrain (and its resulting pain or discomfort)
- Headaches
- Blurred vision
- Dry eyes
- Neck and shoulder pain
Computer Vision Syndrome Treatment
Just as there are many different symptoms related to digital eye strain, so, too, there are many treatments. Of course, the most obvious treatment is also the most challenging: reduce your overall time on screens! This is particularly hard if your job depends on it. If, like many, you find computer and device usage unavoidable, do the next best thing: follow the 20-20-20 rule.
The American Optometric Association came up with the 20-20-20 rule specifically to combat the symptoms and long-term vision decline caused by Computer Vision Syndrome. Following these guidelines, you would take a 20-second break from screens every 20 minutes in front of them – and make sure you’re looking at something (at least) 20 feet away to give your eyes a chance to rest and refocus.
Other than taking breaks, if you continue suffering from things like dry eyes, headaches, or eye strain, we’d love to help further. Music City Optical is home to the leading Nashville Eye Doctor.
